Obituary for Martha L. Rogers

Martha Rogers, 68, of Reader, WV, passed away Friday, April 5, 2019 at Arbors of Marrietta in Marrietta, OH, following a second bout with cancer.

She was born May 15, 1950, in New Martinsville, the daughter of the late Herbert C. and Ruth V. Stewart Rogers. In addition, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marci Ruth Anderson, and a special friend, David Dale Anderson.

Survivors include a son, Rodney (Stephanie) Anderson of Morgantown, WV, two grandchildren, Carter and Kaitlyn Anderson, Partner and Manfriend, Don Arnett, and his dog, Goldie. The couple often joked that they had been together for thirty years because each year seemed like a decade.
She also leaves behind two brothers, H. John (Debbie) Rogers and children Eliot and Madison, and Jim (Roxanne) Rogers and children Heather Jami Rogers, Laura (Josh) Gomez, Sean (Lauretha) Rogers, and Rebecca (Kane) and children Jason and Isis. She also "adopted" four grandchildren, Grayson, Emma, Aivree and Cambri, children of Kim and Andy Baughman.

Until her illness, Ms. Rogers attended religious services at least weekly at a variety of churches in the area while remaining a member of the long ago defunct Jacksonburg United Methodist Church where she took her children and served as VBS director and Youth Group leader as well as pianist for the church and the Alvy United Methodist Church under Pastors Bill and Elsie Smith. During this time and with the help of many others, she wrote a report which resulted in Jacksonburg United Methodist being named District Small Church of the Year.

Her employment began in June of 1968 at PPG Industries and continued to Monongahela Power at the Harrison Power Station before being employed by Northern Panhandle Headstart and finding a passion for teaching. In the fall of 77, a position was held for her at Reader Grade School while she finished the last eight weeks of her degree. This position was to alleviate two overcrowded 1st Grade classrooms with thirty-six students each. Ms. Rogers was named Wetzel County Teacher of the Year and a finalist for WV Teacher of the Year in 1990. She retired from Wetzel County Schools in the fall of 2016.

Her favorite pastimes include her grandchildren, walking, hiking, Zumba, line dancing, reading and traveling.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Easter Seal Society, Children's Division, on National Road in Wheeling in memory of her daughter, Marci Ruth Anderson.

Visitation will be held at Palmer Funeral Home in Pine Grove, WV, from 4:00-8:00 pm on Monday, April 8, 2019
with a funeral service at the Reader Trinity United Methodist Church at 11 am on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 with Carol Sue Bishop and Rosemary Bucher officiating. Internment will be at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Hastings, WV.
